Leary's first book, published a year after the suicide of his first wife, at a time when Leary was, in his own words, 'an anonymous institutional employee who drove to work each morning in a long line of commuter cars and drove home each night and drank martinis ... like several million middle-class, liberal, intellectual robots.' Leary was an assistant professor at Berkeley between 1950 and 1955, and in 1959 was installed as a lecturer in Psychology at Harvard. He was fired in 1963 for his championing of psychedelic drugs, both on campus and in print (although the official reason given for his dismissal was that he failed to fulfil his teaching duties). The rest is the Sixties.
