Harvey Milk was the first openly gay politician to be elected to public office in California, and was the prime mover behind turning San Francisco into a bastion of gay equality. He was assassinated in 1978. Milk's story is told in the 2008 film Milk, starring Sean Penn, and in the superb documentary The Times of Harvey Milk,made in 1984 and full of fantastic contemporary footage of this heroic pioneer and brilliantly effective, non-career politician.
