[illus. THOMSON, Hugh] AUSTEN, Jane

Emma

London: Macmillan, 1896

8vo, pp. 437. Original red boards, lettered and with design in gilt to front panel and spine. Peacock patterned endpapers, all edges gilt. Contemporary pencilled presentation inscription to half-title, corners and spine ends lightly bumped, binding just a little tender, but a near fine copy.

First edition thus.

Thomson illustrated a total of sixty-five books, six of them Austen titles. The spectacular 'Peacock' edition of Pride and Prejudice is his crowning achievement, but all his work is beautiful, and this copy of his edition of Emma is a particularly nice example.
