I Could Be Happy

London: Michael Joseph, 1975

8vo, pp. 283. Original purple boards, lettered in gilt to spine. Illustrated dustwrapper, photographic portraits of the author to front and rear panels. A fine copy in a very good dustwrapper, sunned at spine, one corner bumped, and with a little light edgewear.

First edition, in the scarce first issue dustwrapper. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO BOB 'BLOCKBUSTERS' HOLNESS: 'To Bob Holness, with best wishes, Sandy Wilson'.

From 1975 to 1985, Bob Holness co-presented a morning radio show on London's LBC, and over the years amassed a large collection of inscribed copies of books plugged by their authors on the show. Sandy Wilson [1924-1914], best known as the composer of The Boyfriend, joined Holness on the show in 1975 to promote this, his autobiography.

The dustwrapper on this copy, featuring a photographic portrait of a downbeat, reflective Wilson, seems to have been jettisoned early on and replaced with the altogether jauntier model found on most copies offered for sale.

A very nice copy, and a scarce issue.
