O'Brien's First Book
O'BRIEN, Edna

The Country Girls

London: Hutchinson, 1960 8vo, pp. 224.

Original black boards, lettered in gilt to spine. Illustrated dustwrapper, author’s photographic portrait to rear panel. Dustwrapper design by Jillian Willett. Some marking, possibly tape residue, to front free endpaper and front flap, otherwise a near fine copy in a near fine dustwrapper with just a little wear to spine ends.

First edition of the author’s first book. O’Brien’s frank and tender coming of age novel set in rural Ireland scandalised the priesthood who railed against it, thereby guaranteeing its success. Some people never learn.

An excellent copy of O’Brien’s spectacular debut.
