[ed. LANG, Andrew] WALTON, Isaac

London: J.M.Dent, 1896

8vo, pp. 319. Original olive boards, lettered and illustrated in gilt to front panel and spine. Top edge gilt, leading and lower edges uncut. Bookplate to ffep., some offsetting to preliminaries, rear board a little marked, some wear to spine ends. A very good copy.

The Andrew Lang edition, with his introduction. Alfred Gathorne-Hardy's copy, with his bookplate, presented to his nephew George Goschen on the occasion of his tenth birthday.

Alfred Gathorne-Hardy [1845-1918] was the Conservative MP for East Grinstead, a field sports enthusiast, and the author of Autumns in Argyleshire with Rod and Gun (London: Longmans, 1900). In 1903 Gathorne-Hardy presented this volume to his nephew George Joachim Goschen on the occasion of his tenth birthday, with an inscription in the cartouche to the front pastedown: 'G. J. Goschen from Uncle Alfred. November 18 1903.' On 7 January 1916 George Goschen was wounded twice at the Battle of Sheik Sa'ad, and was mentioned in dispatches for gallantry. He died of his wounds twelve days later, at the age of twenty-two.

Both the beauty of this edition, and Andrew Lang's involvement in its production, are the usual selling points for this book, but here both are comprehensively upstaged by the poignancy of the copy's history.
