[Olympia Press] APOLLINAIRE, Guillaume

Amorous Exploits Of A Young Rakehell

Paris: Olympia Press, 1953

Small 8vo, pp. 110. Original green stiff paper wrappers, printed in black. Some light edgewear, but a near fine copy.

First unexpurgated English-language edition, second printing.

Olympia biographer Patrick Kearney notes: 'A translation, reportedly by Richard Seaver, of Les Exploits d'un Jeune Don Juan, an erotic novel that was first published at Paris in 1905 or 1906 by Elias Gaucher. Although generally credited as an original work by Guillaume Apollinaire, it is actually a word-for-word translation by the poet of Kinder-Geilheit, Geständnisse eines Knaben (Berlin: 1891).' Richard Seaver was one of the editorial team of the influential Left-bank literary magazine Merlin, and became a renowned translator of French literature in general, and the work of Samuel Beckett in particular.

A very early Olympia Press title, only the fourth to appear. But for the revised publishing information to verso of title-page, this second printing is identical to the first (published the previous month).
