A Wembley Lad / The Crem

London: Poem Of The Month Club, 1971

Broadside, single sheet, 11" X 15". Faint creasing to top edge, otherwise a near fine example.

First edition, one of 1000 copies SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, AND WITH A TWO-WORD CORRECTION IN HIS HAND. With the original Poem of the Month cover letter.

The correction is in the second poem's final line, the words 'certain, grief' are crossed out and replaced with 'painful, doubt'. All copies carry this correction, as the cover letter notes: '[The correction] was done after great consideration, when all copies had been printed and given to [Betjeman] to sign; and we think it a most interesting example of a writer developing and improving his work.' The letter also acknowledges that both poems had appeared elsewhere before being published by POMC, contrary to their policy: 'We regret the error, due to a misunderstanding, but feel sure members will welcome this unique contribution from so distinguished a poet as John Betjeman.'
