8vo, pp. 350. Scarlet morocco boards with purple inlays, lettered and with publisher's device in gilt to spine, by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. Printed on mould-made paper in Caslon Old Face 14pt. type with Vesta titling. Leading and lower edges uncut, top edge gilt. Original scarlet slipcase. Light wear and darkening to spine, otherwise a near fine copy in a slightly worn and faded slipcase.

Golden Cockerel Press limited edition. No. 74 of 500 copies, and one of 100 copies bound in scarlet morocco, SIGNED BY THE ILLUSTRATOR AND CONTAINING AN EXTRA ENGRAVING.

'This is one of a number of bulky volumes which I published in response to those slighting reviewers who used to refer to my books as 'slim little volumes'. Unfortunately collectors of private press books don't necessarily want a very fat, heavy one. [...] The visual graphic and typographic fun is lost in a book of 350 pages like Jurgen. But externally it has pleasing proportions, and I particularly liked the specials, with John Buckland Wright's fantastic designs blocked in gold in the purple panels. [...] It was just what I wanted for this fond, lush, fantastic tale.'
(Christopher Sandford, proprietor of the Golden Cockerel Press between 1933 and 1959, quoted in Cock-A-Hoop (Private Libraries Association, 1976)).

Very scarce in the signed and morocco-bound limitation.
