Black Orpheus No. 7

Ibadan: Ministry of Education, 1960

Large 8vo, pp. 68. Original illustrated stiff paper wrappers, artwork design by Susanne Wenger. New contributors list tipped in at rear. A little splitting to spine around staples, but unobtrusive and holding firm. Small contemporary ownership signature to title page. A little darkening and light chipping to wrappers, but a very good copy.

First edition.

Issue no. 7 of the highly influential pan-African literary journal, featuring contributions from Andrew Salkey, Gerald Moore, Cyprian Ekwensi and the journal's founder (and, with Wole Soyinka, its co-editor) Ulli Beier.

The first issue of Black Orpheus appeared in 1957, the last in 1975; there were twenty-nine issues in all. A well preserved copy of this early issue.
