PLATH, Sylvia

The Bell Jar

London: Faber, 1967

Small 8vo, pp. 258. Original black boards, lettered in gilt to spine. Illustrated dustwrapper. Very light bumping to spine ends, but a near fine copy in a very good dust jacket, rear (white) panel just a little dulled, minimal wear to spine ends, and a small area of wear to top corner of front panel.

First edition to be published under Plath's real name.

Written during the last year of her tragically short life this was Plath's only novel, and was first published by Heinemann in 1963 under the pseudonym 'Victoria Lucas'. Plath was ambivalent about the novel, doubted its chances of success, and was worried about scenes which were clearly autobiographical, all of which led her to conceal her name on publication.
