London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1969
8vo, pp. 223. Original dark blue boards, lettered in gilt to spine. Green endpapers, top edge yellow. Illustrated dust jacket designed by Leslie Jessup, author's photographic portrait to rear flap. A fine copy in a near fine dust jacket, with just a little wear to spine ends.
First edition.
Dystopian near-future science fiction from the great grandniece of Eilzabeth Gaskell. A precocious talent in her own right, Jane Gaskell's first published book Strange Love was written when she was fourteen and published two years later in 1957. A Sweet Sweet Summer was the joint-winner of the 1970 Somerset Maugham Award, but the initial print run seems to have been small as copies of the first edition are now extremely rare.
