WATKIN, David

Why Is There Only One Word for Thesaurus?

Brighton: Trouser Press, 1998

8vo, pp. 356. Original green boards, lettered in gilt to spine. Photographically illustrated dustwrapper.

First edition, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO DOUBLE OSCAR-WINNING CINEMATOGRAPHER FREDDIE FRANCIS: 'Dear Fred, You may find some of the technical bits a little difficult, but the rest will tickle your fancy. Mo.' AND TO HIS WIFE: 'Dear Pam, Sorry if I've forestalled you but you too will enjoy the read. Mo. Thanks for the many favours. Merry Xmas. X. X.'.

Cinematographer David Watkin [1925-2008] worked for Ken Russell, Richard Lester, Franco Zeffirelli, Tony Richardson and Mike Nichols, among many others. He shot the title sequence for Goldfinger (1964); Help! (1965) for The Beatles; Catch-22 (1970); Chariots of Fire (1981); and won an Oscar for his work on Out of Africa (1985). An uncredited Freddie Francis worked with Watkin on the cinematography of Return to Oz (1985).

The subscribers' list at the front of this scarce, self-published autobiography lists Sean Connery, Hugh Hudson, Norman Jewison, Ian Holm, Liam Neeson, Tom Stoppard, Sydney Pollack and Franco Zeffirelli, among many others.

A fine copy, and a finer association.
