[SPENCER, Terence] [comp. BARNES, Richard]

Mods!

London: Eel Pie Publishing, 1979

Large 8vo, pp. 128. Original photographic wrappers. A fine copy.

First edition, softbound issue. A pictorial history of the Mods scene, published by Pete Townshend's imprint Eel Pie Publishing.

Pete Townshend and Richard Barnes knew each other well -- it was Barnes who had come up with the name 'The Who'. In 1978 Townshend commissioned this book from his old friend to coincide with the release of the film Quadrophenia, based on The Who's 1973 Mod rock opera, and quickly became a key text in the Mod revival. Most of the book's photographs are the work of Terry Spencer, who had been commissioned in 1963 to illustrate an article on Swinging London for Life magazine.

Frequently reprinted, the first edition is very scarce. A fine copy.
