8vo, pp. 561, 32pp. publisher's advertisements bound in at rear. Original red cloth illustrated boards, lettered in gilt to front panel and spine. Publisher's device in black to rear panel. Patterned endpapers. Pencilled ?contemporary ownership signature to half-title, two small chips to leading edge of first Contents page, one signature bound slightly proud of rest of text block. A very good copy in a very good binding, bumped at corners and gilt worn at spine, which has wear at ends and joins.

First edition, first issue, with the publisher's advertisements dated March 1883, and preceding the US edition by five days.

A collection of Twain's 1875 Atlantic Monthly articles on the subject, supplemented by writings generated by a return to the region some years later.
