I Am A Camera

New York: Random House, 1952

8vo, pp. 182. Original brown coarse boards, lettered in gilt to front panel and spine. Inlaid photographic production still to front panel. Printed dustwrapper. Photographic production stills to title page and text. Small bookseller’s label to rear pastedown, a near fine copy in a near fine dustwrapper with just a little light edgewear.

First edition.

Based on Christopher Isherwood’s 1939 novel Goodbye to Berlin, I Am A Camera premiered in 1951 at the Empire Theatre, New York, and was showered with Tony Awards, two of them going to cast members Marian Winters and Julie Harris (as Sally Bowles). Harris reprised her role in the 1955 film version; in 1966 Kander and Ebb wrote the musical; and in 1972 Liza Minelli and Joel Grey starred in the classic film.

A beautiful copy of the play of the novel which became the film, the musical, and the musical film.
