Inscribed by Graves to Honor Wyatt
GRAVES, Robert

To Juan At The Winter Solstice

N.p. Privately Printed, 1944

178 x 131mm, pp. 4. Single sheet, folded once. Sunned at the leading edge and with a little foxing inside and out. Old horizontal fold, with small tear just starting at leading edge.

First edition, INSCRIBED BY GRAVES ON THE FRONT LEAF: 'Honor with love from Robert. New Year 1945'.

The recipient was the journalist Honor Wyatt, a member of the Graves-Riding inner circle at Deya. Graves' son Juan had been born on 22nd December 1944 -- the winter solstice -- and this poem was circulated to close family and friends to celebrate his arrival. It was later anthologised in Graves' Poems 1938-1945[Cassell, 1946]. The handwritten correction to l. 17 is present on every copy we have examined, and is presumed to be by Graves himself. The exact limitation is unknown but very few copies were printed, destined as they were for Graves' intimate circle only.

Rare.
