The Works of Stanley Houghton

London: Constable & Co., 1914

3 vols., pp. 264, 283 and 310. Original green boards with spine labels. Spare spine label tipped in to rear of all three volumes. Bookplates to front pastedowns of all three volumes (see below). Tissue guards to frontispieces. Edges uncut. Spines of all three volumes faded to brown, boards of vol. I also faded. Spine labels worn, corners and spine ends a little bumped, but a well preserved set.

First collected edition. One of 1040 copies, of which 1000 were for sale. JOHN GIELGUD'S SET, WITH HIS BOOKPLATE TO ALL THREE VOLUMES. With an introduction by Houghton's fellow Manchester school playwright, Harold Brighouse.

Stanley Houghton died of meningitis on 11 December 1913, at the age of thirty-two. This collected edition of his work, including one-act plays, dramatic criticism, essays and sketches as well as his full-length plays, is a fitting testament to the highly productive if tragically short career of the author of Hindle Wakes.
