Recipes to 'terrify the imagination'...
[pseud. MOTT, Edward Spencer] SPENCER, Edward

The Flowing Bowl

London: Grant Richards, 1903

8vo, pp. 241. Original red boards illustrated in black, and lettered in black to spine. Some marking to rear board, and some general faint staining most likely caused by proximity to a cocktail shaker. Wear to spine, most prominently at front edge.

Second edition, first published by Grant Richards in 1899.

A scarce and very funny history of drinks, drinking and drunks, and the follow-up to the author's similarly themed and very successful Cakes and Ale, published in 1897. Spencer was diligent in his research: a contemporary reviewer wrote '...some of the punches, cobblers, cocktails, and pick-me-ups for which he supplies recipes positively terrify the imagination.'
