Windy City

London: Stoll Moss Theatres, N.d. [1981]

83 mimeographed pp., bound in blue stiff paper wrappers secured with two split pins to left edge. Title window to front wrapper. Two annotated scraps of paper laid in. Wrappers worn and creased, contents very well preserved.

DICK VOSBURGH’S WORKING COPY OF WINDY CITY, WITH HIS EXTENSIVE REWRITES AND ANNOTATIONS, AND WITH THE WORKING TITLE (EXTRA EXTRA) DELETED AND REPLACED BY THE FINAL TITLE IN HIS HAND.

Windy City, a musical adaptation of Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur’s play The Front Page (1928), opened at the Bristol Hippodrome in June 1982 before transferring to the Victoria Palace theatre in London the following month. Directed by Peter Wood, it starred Dennis Waterman as Hildy Johnson and Anton Rodgers as his nemesis Walter Burns.

This copy of the script, from the estate of the show’s author and lyricist Dick Vosburgh, is heavily revised in his hand, with his cuts, rewrites and additions to the cast list -- and, to the title page, the updating of the title itself from the show’s working title Extra Extra.
